From the Tribune: Bahamian boaters were treated to an unusual and exciting sight last weekend as a mother whale and her calf made their way past Paradise Island. The aquatic mammals were spotted by some intrepid boaters who say they have been waiting all their life to see a whale in the wild. It is speculated that the whale and her calf were humpbacks, known to migrate to tropical or sub-tropical waters to breed, before returning north to polar waters to feed

Atlantis Paradise Island: World's First-Ever LEGO Summer Camp

During three 5-day LEGO workshops this July, children will have a chance to work side-by-side with a LEGO Master Builder in group building events and hands-on, minds-on building challenges. The camp sessions will take place from July 12-16, 2010 (Session One); July 19-23, 2010 (Session Two); and July 26-30, 2010 (Session Three) with a cost per session of $425 per child. Nassau's Straw Market to Be Rebuilt

Eight years ago, the famous Straw Market in Nassau was destroyed by a fire. Since then, the popular shopping spot for tourists and cruise ship passengers has been housed under a large tent. Every year, I've heard reports that it was going to be rebuilt within a year. After 5 or 6 years, I grew skeptical. Now, however, the construction crews have actually broken ground at a new spot near the site of the current market. The artist's sketches of what it will look like upon completion are lovely. The current tented site is hot, loud, and overcrowded, so that you have to push past merchants and other shoppers to walk down one of the aisles. The project is scheduled for a 2-year completion. As I always say in these situations, "We'll see."

For the first time in 20 years, marathon running will be held in The Bahamas. The organizers of Marathon Bahamas are excited as all of their plans appear to be falling in place. It will be held on Sunday February 14, 2010, starting at Fort Montagu at 6:00 a.m. and ending at Arawak Cay. The race will cover 26.2 miles and will facilitate the historic sites of downtown Nassau, the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island and Old Fort Bay.

Over the past few years, the addition of the Aquaventure water park, Dolphin Cay, the Cove, and the Reef have been huge undertakings. For a while, the company that owns the Atlantis Resort has been considering a theme park. We know that Atlantis owns the undeveloped area to the west of Harborside (on the south side of Paradise Island near The Reef). While the current gossip states that the new area will be developed for kids' interests, it may become even more than that. Atlantis employees are tight-lipped about the new plans, stating that the changes in the past few years have rarely become what they were in the early planning stages. We'll have to wait and see!

Wait Time Reduced at Nassau's International Airport

Passengers going to the US from the Lynden Pindling International Airport currently have to go through two separate screenings. That means you have to remove your shoes and metal objects twice, remove your laptops and liquids from your bag, go through the x-ray machines. All twice. Soon, the second screening will be removed and everyone will be screened once, like all other airports.

Announcing a clampdown in the wake of Saturday's double shooting, bosses at the resort also condemned irresponsible parents for using Atlantis as a "teen sitting service".
